Playing their first home game in the ensuing BBL, the Hobart Hurricanes won the toss and elected to field first against the Perth Scorchers. Riley Meredith struck early after getting the better of Finn Allen in the first over followed by Waqar Salamkheil removing Cooper Connolly. Keaton Jennings and Josh Inglis opted for a cautious approach, summing up for a 27 runs-mandatory powerplay before the latter switched gears in a 58-run third-wicket partnership. Jennings fell halfway through the innings but the wicketkeeper-batter capitalised on the looseners before falling to a runout enforced by Meredith in the 16th over. Despite the score reading 133/4 in 16 overs, the tail gathered just 22 runs in the last four overs as the Hurricanes’ pace quartet curbed them to 155/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, the hosts got off to a brisk 32-run opening partnership inside the four overs of field restrictions before losing Caleb Jewell in the final over of the phase. Unbothered by the setback, Mitchell Owen counterattacked the opposition under Shai Hope’s presence for a good amount of time. While the Windies batter played second fiddle, the power-hitter brought up his fifty with a six in the lead-up to the drinks break with the score 79/1. Several bowling changes failed as Hope’s sumptuous strokeplay coupled with Owen’s power-hitting propelled Hobart to 119/1 in 15 overs. Subsequently, the power surge was taken and the Scorchers outwitted Hope for 35 in the 17th over with 23 needed from 20 balls. With multiple wickets in hand, Ben McDermott grafted the remainder of the chase with Owen reaching to his maiden BBL century and chasing it down with four balls left.

How is Engie Stadium always in such poor condition? The pitch and outfield are a disgrace every year. Get some groundskeepers!! #BBL14 #BBL @ThunderBBL
