Twitter reacts to Hurricanes’ powerplay blitz makes way for unprecedented fire emergency at Gabba.

What is common with hail storms, swarming bees, rain, lightning, and desert storms are causes of sudden stoppage in a cricket game. The latest addition to the list being a  fire emergency that took place at the Gabba during the Brisbane Heat versus Hobart Hurricanes clash, causing a halt in play.

The Hurricanes’ decision to field first in a virtual quarter-final didn’t yield great rewards for their bowlers despite Nathan McSweeney departing early. Usman Khawaja’s 9-ball 23 paved the way for Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw’s 69-run stand that laid the foundation for a 201-run total in 20 overs. Eyeing to hunt it down, Caleb Jewell and Mitchell Owen took the opposition by storm, opting for a gung-ho approach and racking up 47 runs in the mandatory powerplay before an unexpected, yet alarming halt at the venue.

While the crowd at the Gabba were mesmerized by the batting prowess of the Hurricanes openers, they were taken aback by dense smoke arising near the DJ arena. The cameramen were quick to get hold of the footage and a fire broke into the DJ set up with a guy near it, trying to use a fire extinguisher. Similar to the Hurricanes’ batters, the flames had a never-give-up attitude, only for the situation to worsen. Subsequently, the fire brigade rushed to the scene and the combustion was neutralized; thankfully, causing no major damage.
