Taking full advantage of the batting-friendly pitch, Punjab got off to a roaring start after skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh raced to 53 for no loss in just three overs. Although Priyansh was dismissed in the fourth over by Harshal Patel, Iyer and Singh continued the onslaught. The early carnage was briefly halted when debutant Eeshan Malinga removed Singh in the seventh over with the score reading 92/2. At the halfway mark, Punjab looked in control at 120 for 2 with Iyer and Nehal Wadhera at the crease. Iyer brought up his fastest IPL fifty, reaching the milestone in just 22 balls. However, Sunrisers found a glimmer of hope when Wadhera and Shashank Singh fell in the 14th and 15th overs respectively. Despite the setbacks, Iyer stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking, taking Punjab to 205 for 4 in 17 overs while striking at an impressive 235. The momentum shifted again when Harshal Patel removed both Iyer and Glenn Maxwell in the 18th over. But Marcus Stoinis had the final say as he smashed four consecutive sixes off the last over bowled by Shami, powering Punjab to a massive 245 for 6 in 20 overs.
Delivering a commanding response to Punjab Kings’ massive total, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma launched a fiery assault, taking the score to 83/0 in just six overs. Sharma broke out of a lean patch and was in sublime touch as he brought up his fifty in just 19 balls. The duo kept up the onslaught and raced to 165/0 by the 12th over with Head also registering a 31-ball half-century.
Although Yuzvendra Chahal finally broke the stand by removing Head in the 13th over, Sharma remained undeterred. He reached a spectacular century in just 40 balls and celebrated by pulling out a chit dedicated to the fans. The left-hander kept going strong, nearly sealing the win for Hyderabad with his breathtaking knock. He was eventually dismissed by Arshdeep Singh in the 17th over after scoring a sensational 141 off 55 balls. With just 12 runs needed off 14 deliveries, the result was a mere formality. SRH completed the chase in 18.3 overs, ending their four-match losing streak in style and handing Punjab an unforgettable defeat.
