‌SL vs WI | CPL emerging names earn maiden call-up as Windies Big Four opts out for Sri Lanka series

A blend of youth and experience will take center stage under captain Rovman Powell for West Indies’ upcoming white ball tour to  Sri Lanka.  Roston Chase who earned a central contract last week will play the role of a deputy to Rovman. 

In the absence of Pooran, Russell, Hosein, and Hetmyer, young guns like Shamar Springer and Terrance Hinds have earned a maiden call-up to the T20I squad after impressing with an all-round performance in the 2024 Caribbean Premier League.

“The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing out for various reasons, including a need for rest and rehabilitation from injury. We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka,” Sammy said.  

In heartwarming news, Brandon King returned to the squad after missing a chunk of the games in the 2024 T20 World Cup due to side strain. Also, Evin Lewis has been called up to the side after the southpaw struck the first century of CPL for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. His ally, Andre Fletcher was preferred over Johnson Charles who is currently the third-highest rungetter of the tourney with 445 runs at 44.50 in eleven innings.

Switching attending to the ODI squad, Antigua and Barbuda Falcons batter Jewel Andrew earned a call-up for the fifty-over format as Shai Hope continues to lead the troop. Alzarri Joseph, who is rested for the T20Is will continue to act as the vice-captain of the ODI squad.

“As we continue to build our ODI team, this tour offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate strategies and give opportunities to emerging talent. We are excited to see young players like Jewel Andrew, who has earned his place as an exciting prospect for the future.”

The three T20Is will be staged at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium while as many ODIs will be hosted at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium from October 20-27.
