Rajasthan Royals failed to muster any momentum with the bat in their home opener for the season at Barsapara Stadium and only managed to put 151/9 on the board as a result. In response, the Kolkata Knight Riders themselves got off to a sedate start while boasting an all-new opening pair of franchise debutant Moeen Ali and Quinton de Kock, with Sunil Narine missing the game due to health concerns. While the Proteas still found some gears to strike four boundaries and a couple of maximums during a difficult powerplay, Moeen only managed just four runs in 11 deliveries following a plethora of false shots. Somehow, the situation soon turned even sourer for him, when he practically gave up his own wicket with a little helping hand from Riyan parag.
Moeen and Quinton had already showed signs of some miscommunication between the stumps during their 40-run opening stand and things ultimately came to head in the seventh over. The English opener drove the first ball of Riyan Parag’s second over through the covers and sprinted across the deck calling for a second even as Quinton jogged past him. When Moeen still seemed intent on taking a couple, Quinton firmly denied the offer but the 37-year-old was not ready to take no for an answer as he quickly turned around and began running for a second. It was only when he reached halfway down the track that he realized Quinton was sticking to his guns and was left with no option but try to scramble back.
While all this chaos unfolded, Riyan seemed to be blissfully unaware while tracing his steps back to his bowling mark but was fortunately still in a good enough position to collect the ball when the throw rifled in from the deep and almost instinctively flicked off the bails at the non-striker’s end. Moeen also seemed to be absurdly unbothered as he made little attempt to put in a dive or firmly drag his bat in and the replays showed he was well short of the crease, taking Riyan completely by surprise. The Assam player could not help but break into laughter at having earned his team a wicket through pure impulse, an apt representation of Twitterati’s emotions as well.
