Only 80 balls of play possible on rained out Day 1 in Brisbane

Less than 15 overs of play occurred on Friday on the opening day of the third Test between India and Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy before rain played spoilsport and forced a standstill. The host openers Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja survived probing spells to emerge unscathed.

With a healthy tinge of green on the deck and dark clouds hovering in the sky, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and asked Australia to bat first at the Gabba. The openers began cautiously, fending off questions from Jasprit Bumrah in the dreaded channel while pummelling Mohammed Siraj anytime he went a little short. Despite the conditions on offer, swing came at a premium, meaning no wickets fell for the first five overs of play when the first spell of showers arrived. After a short 30-minute interruption, the players took to the field for another seven overs of play before the rains returned, this time heavier and more venomous. By the time the heavens cleared up post Tea, the outfield had taken enough damage to render play impossible despite the efficient drainage system boasted by the Gabba.
