Begay is a former Government Director of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), former chair of the AISES Board of Administrators, and the recipient of the AISES Lifetime Achievement Award.

Begay was a founding father of the UNM AISES Chapter as a pupil chief. In 2000, she was the recipient of the Stanford College 2000 Multicultural Alumni of the 12 months Award.
