The English Premier League receives a major boost as they could receive an extra spot in the UEFA Champions League in the next season. With none of the English teams being able to reach the playoffs of the Champions League or Europa League, this comes as a major boost.
The English Premier League is now set to receive an extra spot for the UEFA Champions League in the next season. Four teams in the Premier League standings, which includes Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa, have already secured their spot for the tournament under the new format.
Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa were able to receive direct qualification for the last 16 of the tournament from their English Premier League standings. But Manchester City will have to go through a knockout round against Bayern Munich or Real Madrid to make their spot in the tournament.
Earlier, five teams were reported to get an opportunity to be a part of this tournament through the English Premier League but that did not take place. Now, UEFA has launched a new format which could help more teams to get an opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League with the English Premier League. The nations which secured the most points in the European tournaments would get an additional spot in the Champions League.
Italy and Germany were able to take up those two spots as the English teams were not able to perform that well. None of the English teams was able to reach the quarter finals of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. But with the performances of the English team being improved in the current phases, they are likely to receive the extra spots.
