Lionel Messi bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has been banned from MLS and Concacaf Champions Cup matches. Cheuko, a former military operative, expressed frustration, citing 16 field invasions in 20 months compared to just six in seven years in Europe. The ban followed an altercation during Inter Miami match against Monterrey. While he can access locker rooms, concerns grow over Messi security without him on the sidelines.
With the start of the 2025 MLS season, Lionel Messi’s personal bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has been banned from attending league matches, including the Concacaf Champions Cup. The decision has sparked debate, especially given Cheuko’s claims that field invasions have significantly increased since Messi’s arrival in the U.S., from six incidents in seven years in Europe to 16 in just 20 months in MLS.
The ban was enforced following an incident in April 2024, during Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal against Monterrey. Cheuko was involved in a confrontation after Messi, sidelined due to injury, engaged with Monterrey’s coaching staff over officiating. As a result, Cheuko is now restricted to locker rooms and mixed zones but can no longer be on the field.
Expressing his frustration, Cheuko emphasized his experience in handling security in European leagues and insisted he only wanted to protect Messi. However, he accepted the league’s decision. The absence of Cheuko on the sidelines raises concerns about Messi’s security, as pitch invaders may be more emboldened without his bodyguard’s immediate presence. This marks a new phase in Messi’s MLS career, where security measures may need reassessment.
