India’s longest sea bridge creates record: 5 million vehicles crossed the bridge in seven months

The Atal Setu in Mumbai has created a mindblowing record. Since its inauguration seven months ago, India’s longest sea bridge connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, has been used by over 5 million vehicles according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

This is an extraordinary achievement for Mumbai and the bridge. Between January 13 and August 26, the bridge, officially named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, was crossed by 5,004,350 vehicles, including buses from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (MSRTC) Shivneri services.

The traffic included 47.4 lakh cars, 50,020 mini buses and light motor vehicles, 59,799 double-axle vehicles, 73,074 three-axle vehicles, 80,277 four-six axle vehicles, and 503 oversized vehicles, averaging about 22,000 vehicles per day over 227 days.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, the bridge was opened to the public the following day. It has significantly alleviated congestion and reduced travel times between South Mumbai and key destinations such as Panvel, Pune, and Navi Mumbai. The bridge has also enhanced connectivity to the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Further infrastructure improvements are underway, including the 75 percent-completed Worli-Sewri elevated road, which will offer rapid 5-10 minute access from Worli Seaface to Atal Setu. Additionally, the new elevated road from Chirle Interchange to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway promises even faster travel between South Mumbai, the western suburbs, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and the Mumbai-Goa Highway.
