The under-19 squad of the Indian side squared off against their Japanese counterparts in the Asia Cup game at Sharjah. Japan skipper Koji Hardgrave Abe won the toss and opted to bowl first, but the decision didn’t pay well. India openers Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi were off to a great start and took the scorecard to 65/0 in seven overs. However, the opening stand was broken when Kazuma Kato-Stafford scalped Suryavanshi in the eighth over. Ayush looked great with the bat who scored a half ton but departed thereafter in the 11th over. With skipper Mohammad Amaan and Andre Siddarth, India looked solid at 139/2 in 22 overs. Unfortunately, the 58-run stand was broken when Hugo Kelly dismissed Siddharth who departed scoring 35 off 47. But the main highlight thereafter was the 122-run partnership between Amaan and Karthikeya KP. The duo attacked the Japanese bowlers and charged the score to 260/3 in 39 overs with Karhtikeya departing soon after. Despite the quick fall of wickets, Amaan looked great and ended up scoring a century in 106 deliveries. The heroics from the Indian skipper took India to a brilliant total of 339/6 in 50 overs.
Japan started their chase on a solid note, with openers Hugo Kelly and Nihar Parmar building a steady partnership to take the score to 49/0 in 13 overs. However, the breakthrough came in the 14th over when Hardik Raj dismissed Parmar and brought skipper Abe to the crease. However, his stay was short-lived as Karthikeya struck in the 17th over, leaving Japan at 70/2 after 25 overs with Kato Stafford joining Kelly in the middle. Additionally, Japan’s momentum took another hit when Nikhil Kumar removed Kato Stafford, further collapsing their middle order. By the 28th over, Japan was struggling at 76/3, with Charles Hinze joining Kelly at the crease. Kelly managed to bring up a gritty half-century off 108 balls but fell shortly afterwards to Hardik in the 33rd over, leaving Japan in deeper trouble. The slide continued as Timothy Moore was sent back by Karthikeya in the 38th over. With the required run rate climbing rapidly, Japan faced an uphill battle. Aditya Phadke joined Hinze at the crease, but the team was left reeling at 105/5 after 42 overs still needing 235 runs to secure victory. With 219 required off the last 15, the match was in India’s favour and ultimately, the Men in Blue won the contest by 211 runs.
