India got off to a poor start as openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul failed to get going against the new ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc outwitted the openers, making way for Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in the middle. The pair added 41 runs together before the introduction of spin coupled with slip banters got the better of Gill at the stroke of Lunch.
On the last ball of the 26th over, Lyon came over the wicket and bowled a length delivery outside the stumps. To which, Gill stepped down the ground and edged it to Smith at first slip while trying to nudge it to long on. Both Smith and Marnus (at leg slip) were in ecstasy as they worked in pairs to rattle the Punjab-based batter.
Marnus was heard telling, “Easy Gary, It’s Easy” while Smith mouthed, “this is Bull***t”. Subsequently, Smith yelled,” Oi, let’s play” at Gill, who was hammering the strip with his bat before facing the next delivery. Annoyed by the chirps, the right-hander replied to Smith, “You take your time Smithy, nobody says anything to you.” Right after, the lapse in concentration led to Gill’s downfall as India lost their third wicket in the first session, leaving the Twitterverse unto a frenzy.
