‌BBL, WATCH | Smith sells seething Edwards down the river amidst Doggett’s bullseye

Lack of fitness can often lead to misery in sports. Jack Edwards had a similar fate when his lethargic work between the wickets coupled with Brendan Doggett’s direct hit from the deep sent him back seething back to the hut in the Big Bash League encounter between Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers.

Losing the toss seemed traumatic at the start for the Strikers as they lost three big wickets inside the five overs. However, a 97-run fourth-wicket stand between Ollie Pope and Alex Ross coupled with Jamie Overton’s 14-ball 32* cameo propelled the hosts to 182/5 in 20 overs. Similar to their opposition, the Sixers incurred early jitters but Steve Smith’s flamboyant approach kept them in the hunt. However, the Aussie veteran’s quick work between the wickets left Edwards fuming after the mandatory powerplay.

On the last ball of the sixth over, Jordan Buckingham came over the wicket and bowled a low full-toss at the off stump that Edwards milked towards deep mid-wicket. Doggett attacked the ball from the deep and induced a direct hit at the striker’s end with Edwards falling short of the crease despite a dive. Smith was quick to call for the second run but his partner was hesitant initially after completing the single. Nevertheless, he was left with no choice but to run for the second, resulting in a run-out. Subsequently, Edwards was seen fuming as he thwarted his willow at the ground before strolling off the field.
