A 25-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl on a New York City subway Wednesday morning.
Police were called to the 34th Street-Herald Square station just after 11:30 a.m. for a report of a woman who gave birth on a northbound W train, authorities said in a news release.
The mother was on the train when she fell to the ground, one passenger said. Others quickly rushed to help her and the baby girl was born moments later.
“People are screaming does anyone have scissors,” passenger Bryanna Brown told NBC New York. “Another young lady that was on the train she pulls out a pocket knife, she then cuts the umbilical cord.”
Video captured the moment two women helped deliver the baby.
The mother and baby were taken to Bellevue Hospital “in good health,” police said.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow praised everyone who helped.
“This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other, assisted by caring transit workers and other responders, reflecting the best of the subway community and this city,” he said in a statement.
“We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well,” he continued, referring to a nickname for the baby.
Crichlow said he looks forward to welcoming them both back “for a lifetime of reliable—and hopefully less dramatic—rides.”
