Being asked to follow-on after incurring a lead of 489 runs in their first innings, Sri Lanka received early jitters as the openers failed to withstand the new ball. However, the middle-order showed resilience with a 69-run third-wicket stand between Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews. It was followed by thirties from Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, and Kusal Mendis, with the latter getting dismissed due to Carey’s clumsy work behind the stumps.
On the last ball of the 41st over, Nathan Lyon came over the wicket and bowled a fuller one near the fourth stump. Kusal shimmied down the ground, trying to whip it with the line but got beaten on the outside edge due to a sharp away turn. Carey, behind the stumps, fumbled with the ball but dislodged the bails with the batter outside the crease. But a closer look from the TV umpire reflected that the ball was not received well by the gloveman. However, it was jammed between the top ends of the gloves due to which the final verdict remained out. Carey, who was part of a controversial run out against Jonny Bairstow during the Ashes 2023, could’ve been a center of attraction once again. As the red rock hung by the tip of gloves, the Twitterverse guffawed over the ICC laws.
Australia three wickets away in Galle!
Carey does juuuust enough to complete the stumping 😅#SLvAUS pic.twitter.com/Xe0XKkAKSJ— 7Cricket (@7Cricket) February 1, 2025
Isn’t it always the worst when the next wicket falls before you’ve even tweeted about the previous one? 😉

Shocker
Absolute shocker of a decision & Carey should be embarrassed claiming it. He never had control of ball when he removed the bails. Umpire made a howler

Screw up
Law 29.2.1.5 says the ball must be “held”, not touching the glove, for the wicket to be broken fairly.
DRS screws up again. 🤦🏻♂️— Big Crompy (@BigCrompy) February 1, 2025
It will be funny if both of our Aussie teams finish at the same time. 😁#Ashes #Cricket @AusWomenCricket

You’ve all been good, so no paywall on this one. Also, the last two-thirds of it doubles as my day four report card for the Sri Lanka v Australia Test. #SLvAUS 🏏 https://t.co/DC55YGibvC
