‌Wriddhiman Saha set to hang boots after Ranji Trophy edition with Bengal

Saha, who turned 40 last month will be drawing curtains on his illustrious 17-year-old career, having donned the Indian jersey for 40 matches. He confirmed that he would be giving his all to help Bengal clinch the Ranji Trophy title after lurking near it for the past four years. Saha also clarified that he won’t be participating in the domestic white ball events for the State.

Saha made his debut against South Africa in 2010 but cemented his position in the Indian Test team following MS Dhoni’s Test retirement in 2014. He was a regular in the Indian red-ball setup until Rishabh Pant announced himself in the format. The Siliguri-born scored 1353 runs in 56 innings with three centuries and six fifties under his name before being a second choice to Pant at the fag end of his International career. Following his last T20 against New Zealand at the Wankhede, the Rahul Dravid-led coaching unit suggested Saha to move on as they wished to invest more time in young lads.

Currently, Saha is a part of the Bengal setup and preparing for the Ranji Trophy round four clash against Karnataka in Bengaluru. He came into the State after two years with Tripura as a mentor cum cricketer. Although he left Bengal on bad terms after a clash of words with CAB joint-secretory Debabrata Das, former India captain Sourav Ganguly acted as the mediator to bring Saha back into the Bengal team. Current Bengal vice-captain Sudip Chatterjee is yet another veteran of the State who returned to the side with Saha.

The 40-year-old has also played a pivotal role in mentoring young cricketers such as Abishek Porel, who was one of the four retentions of Delhi Capitals in the 2025 Indian Premier League retentions. His retirement means there are less chances of Saha registering for the upcoming IPL auction, having served franchises such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans since the tournament’s inception in 2008.
