KATHMANDU: Pakistan’s women’s football team suffered a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Bangladesh in their SAFF Women’s Championship Group ‘A’ match at the Dasharath Rangsala Stadium on Sunday.

Zahmena Malik’s 32nd-minute strike, capitalising on a swift counterattack, put Pakistan ahead. However, defending champions Bangladesh’s relentless pressure paid off in stoppage time, as Shamsunnahar Jr. leveled the score in the 91st minute.

Bangladesh, managed by Englishman Peter James Butler, dominated possession and created chances through Ritu Porna’s right-wing exploits, while Pakistan relied on counter-attacks.

Pakistan defender Maria Jamila’s collision with Shamsunnahar halted play briefly, while Suha Hirani’s audacious 25th-minute effort from halfway was saved by Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna Chakma.

Zahmena’s goal stemmed from Rameen’s brilliant long ball, outpacing Bangladesh defender Sheuli Azim and scoring past Rupna with a fine touch.

Bangladesh kept the pressure in the second half while Pakistan defended deep to cling onto their lead. Pakistan goalkeeper Nisha Ashraf made crucial saves, including a decent stop from substitute Masura Parvin’s long range shot in the second half.

Pakistan’s defense held firm until stoppage time and it seemed that Pakistan would clinch all three points.

But Ritu’s perseverance denied the national team the opportunity.

Ritu received the ball from the defence and beautifully ran past Pakistan defender Sanah Mehdi before delivering a precise cross which found Shamsunnahar, who headed home the equaliser.

The draw leaves Pakistan, coached by Adeel Rizki, with one point from two matches, following their 2-5 loss to India. Bangladesh’s now only need a draw in their upcoming match against India on Wednesday to qualify for the semi-final, while Pakistan’s hopes depend on the outcome.
