‌Irani Cup | Kotian’s stellar show dominates Rest of India as Mumbai end 27-year drought

Mumbai have achieved yet another golden milestone under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership as they win the Irani Cup 2024 by a first innings lead of 121 runs. In the process, they ended a 27-year-old drought with Tanush Kotian’s ton landing the final nail in the coffin for the Rest of India.

Overnight batter and previous innings double centurion Sarfaraz Khan failed to extend his knock for long on the last day with Shardul Thakur following him back to the pavilion, courtesy of Saransh Jain’s fifer and Manav Suthar’s spin wizardry. With the Rest of India aiming to bundle them thick and fast, Tanush Kotian withstood like a wall with very good defense. Mohit Avasthi was stellar in assisting the all-rounder who brought up his fifty before Lunch with the score 260/8 in 65 overs.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led unit summoned part-timers in Ishan Kisha, B Sai Sudharsan, and Devdutt Padikkal to roll their partnership surpassing the 100-run mark and taking the game away from the Rest of India. With Avasthi reaching a fifty at the stroke of Tea, the game was called with Mumbai winning the Irani Trophy after 27 years. The lead touched 450 already, what seemed like a practically improbable mark to achieve in just a session against a quality bowling line-up.  The two captains Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahane shook hands with the Mumbai dressing room going berserk, having achieved their 16th Irani Cup.
