Tabraiz Shamsi steps away from Proteas contract to prioritise family and domestic cricket

‌Shamsi has turned down a central contract to pursue wider opportunities in global T20 franchise leagues. The left-arm wrist spinner and Cricket South Africa (CSA) jointly announced the decision on Thursday, confirming it is effective immediately.

“I have decided to opt out of my central contract in order to be more flexible during the domestic season, allowing me to explore all opportunities available and look after my family in the best way possible,” Shamsi said in a statement to CSA.

He further added, “ This will not impact my ability or motivation to play for the Proteas in any way and I will always be available to play for my country whenever I am needed. It has always been my dream to bring the World Cup home to South Africa, and no franchise league will ever be more important than playing for my country.”

CSA Director of Cricket, Nkwe added: “Shamo is a key member of our white-ball squads, and while we respect his decision, we are pleased that he remains committed to representing South Africa.

The 34-year-old was last seen in South Africa’s colours during the 2024 T20 World Cup Final against India where the Proteas failed to breach the knockout jinx.

Shamsi is the latest cricketer to follow the growing trend of players turning down national contracts. This move mirrors decisions made earlier by New Zealand stars like Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, and Finn Allen, who opted out of their central contracts for the 2024-25 season.
