The Sports Administration unit at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is excited to host the two-day University Sports South Africa (USSA) E-Sports Tournament at the Fred Crooke’s Sports Centre on the Steve Biko Campus in Durban on Friday, 30 August and Saturday, 31 August 2024. The tournament will see 130 students from 10 South African universities competing to be declared the ultimate E-Sports champion.
DUT is honoured to be given the opportunity to host a prestigious USSA Tournament once again. Last December, DUT hosted a two-day USSA Chess Tournament, which consisted of 320 students from 20 South African universities.
The DUT E-Sports coach, Mr Ntokozo Radebe said the DUT E-Sports team is looking forward to excelling in the upcoming tournament. “For the past years, since the DUT E-Sports team started participating in the USSA tournament, they had been performing so well. They had been making us proud and even during COVID-19 they had done exceptionally. I am certain that since they will be playing at home, the team will be steadier and more confident,” he alluded.
Expressing her excitement, Ms Takalani Mfamadi, DUT Sport Officer said that E-Sports is fast becoming an influential tool in education as schools, colleges, and universities are going digital, using technology to come up with creative and innovative ways of teaching and learning. She indicated that E-Sports encourages the students to socialise, thus promoting diversity and inclusivity amongst them.
Ms Takalani expressed her appreciation to the DUT Sports Administration Unit for showcasing one of the DUT ENVISION2030 Living Values, ‘Commitment’, by taking yet again another huge task that will be very informative and bring exposure to DUT. She believes this will be an opportunity for students to get experience and excel in sports.
The winners will receive trophies and medals from the University Sports South Africa.
