The advanced toll collection system GNSS has already been announced by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Currently, it is in the testing phase, and soon will be implement in India.

As the auto industry in India witnesses massive growth with each passing day, the number of toll collection is also getting bigger. Now, this traditional method of collecting the toll seems like come to an end as the government gearing up to replace the method through a new age technology called Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

The advanced toll collection system method has already been announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. Currently, it is in the test phase, and soon to terminate the old-school toll collection system in India.

How GNSS Works: A Closer Look

Well, unlike FASTag, the future GNSS will be based on a navigation satellite system. It will come with a Satellite-based unit, which will be installed in the vehicles. This will allow the concerned authority to track cars once they start using the toll highway.

When the vehicle exits from the tolled road, the system will calculate the actual usage of the toll road, and deduct a precise amount automatically. This will ensure the travellers only pay the amount for the distance covered on the toll highway.

Benefits of GNSS Over FASTag

The upcoming toll collection system will allow customers to pay the exact amount for the usage of the toll road. The consumers will able to save a decent amount of money on every trip.

It will also terminate the traditional toll booths, giving a big relief from the long queues and allowing the drivers to have a more convenient travelling experience.

Implementation Timeline and Expected Rollout

It has been reported by the government that the task does not happen overnight. It will take some good time. However, the testing of the model already kickstarted on two major national highways – Bengaluru-Mysore National Highway (NH-275) in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar National Highway (NH-709) in Haryana.

The official analysing all the challenges and data, and will send it to the concerned ministry. Once getting the green signal from the top official, the new toll collection system will roll out in phases, covering the top highways that connect major cities in India.
